History
The site of the Bethel Centre dates back to May 1899, when the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception was first unveiled.
Constructed for the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, the chapel and sacristy were designed by John Francis Bentley, the ecclesiastical architect behind Westminster Cathedral.
Built as an extension to Bridge House, which was acquired from the Courtauld family, the original site included a refectory and accommodation for the sisters and remained largely unchanged until the 1960s, when a nursing home and nursery were added.
It was designated a grade II listed building in 1973, ensuring the preservation of its historical features.
Acquired by the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of London in 2019, the Bethel Centre provides a venue for retreats, services, official meetings and ecumenical gatherings.
