History

Werneth Grange was built as a family home in 1871 for Joseph Lees, a local cotton magnate.

In 1907, it was purchased for the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy, and its Gothic chapel, the refectory and school rooms were added.

Four years later, the neighbouring building of Fernholme was purchased, enabling the sisters to open a boarding and day school, which continued to operate throughout the two World Wars and right up until 1983, when it closed to allow the nuns to focus on their nursing endeavours.

In 2018, Werneth Grange was acquired by charity St Mark Universal Care, which provides overseas healthcare aid in the Middle East, as well as running a youth centre and support services locally in Oldham.

Today, the Werneth name continues to carry significant heritage and recognition in Oldham, lending its name to the surrounding area, including the neighbouring park.
